Two man riding in a Honda® UTV in the road for the forest.Between the Pioneer® and Talon® lineups, Honda makes some of the most sturdy and reliable UTVs on the market. But there is one maintenance issue that can bring down even the most rock-solid UTV, and that is overheating.

Overheating can occur when the engine is overworked, when the vehicle is exposed to extreme heat, or when the radiator fins are blocked. Because our side by sides work so hard to overcome the terrain, and because they so often encounter debris that can block the radiator fins, this is a problem many UTV riders have experienced.

While overheating is a common issue, it is nowhere near inevitable. So, what can you do to prevent your Pioneer or Talon UTV from overheating? Keep reading to find out!

Signs That Your Honda® UTV is Overheating

You are out on the trail, and your Talon or Pioneer UTV is running as it should. Then, out of nowhere, the “check engine” light comes on. What could it mean? In many cases, this is a warning that your engine is about to overheat – and you should view it as a welcome reminder to give the engine a break, not as a nuisance to be ignored!

If your Talon or Pioneer does begin to overheat, you will probably see or smell smoke coming from the engine, and hear a loud ticking noise. When this happens, you have no other choice but to pull over to the side of the trail and let your UTV cool down.

Preventing Your Talon® or Pioneer® UTV from Overheating

Overheating is best avoided altogether, of course, and one of the best ways to avoid it is to install a radiator relocation kit. This accessory makes it possible to relocate the radiator to a spot on your UTV where the radiator fins will be less exposed to debris. Moving the radiator away from the engine can also help it achieve better air circulation and cooling.

However, if your UTV radiator has already been damaged, relocating it may not solve the issue. In this case, you will need to replace the radiator and fan. You should also consider adding a radiator screen to protect the new radiator from damage.
