Pivot Levers
Accidents happen, and dirt bikes are designed to withstand the occasional scrape. That said, they do have some vulnerable components, such as the clutch and brake levers. If either of these levers gets damaged on the trail, you can wind up stranded. You can avoid this outcome by replacing your standard levers with pivot levers.
Standard levers have a tendency to snap on impact, while pivot levers will simply pivot in the opposite direction. Pivot levers are also spring-loaded, which means they will snap back into place when you start riding.
Hand Guards
Hand guards are an absolute necessity for enduro racers, and they are a great upgrade for any dirt bike. Your hands are pretty much exposed when riding a dirt bike, and even the most heavy-duty gloves can’t prevent you from breaking a finger if you happen to crash. Hand guards can both protect your levers from damage and keep your hands safe from injury.
Skid Plates
Skid plates are designed to shield the underside of your dirt bike from obstacles and debris that could damage the engine. You can also count on a skid plate to protect the landscape, as exposed dirt bike engines have been known to spark brush fires. A good skid plate will wrap around the sides of your engine.
Auxiliary Fuel Tank
Chances are you won’t be riding your dirt bike in close proximity to a gas station. When you have ventured many miles from the trailhead, the last thing you want is an empty fuel tank. Some riders carry around extra fuel in their backpacks, but this is extremely unsafe. If you plan to take any long rides, do yourself a favor and equip your bike with an auxiliary fuel tank.
Handlebar Plugs
Many dirt bikes handlebars have open ends. This may not seem like much of an issue at first, but when dirt and moisture accumulate in there, they can cause corrosion and weaken your handlebars. A broken handlebar is a costly repair, but you can circumvent this problem with the simple addition of handlebar plugs.
Radiator Guard
Damaged radiators are another expensive fix, so it’s a smart idea to install radiator guards on your dirt bike right off the bat. Radiator guards will extend the life of your radiators and protect them in a crash. They can also give your bike a more custom look, as they come in a wide variety of styles and colors.
