Changing the Oil
The Ruckus comes packed with a small yet powerful four-stroke engine that relies on a combination of engine oil and gasoline. Engine oil lubricates and cleans the inside of the motor to keep it running smoothly. Because engine oil degrades over time, it needs to be replaced at regular intervals. Your Ruckus will reach its fullest potential when oil changes are performed about every 500 miles, but you can extend that interval to 1000 miles if you have a tendency to ride at lower RPMs.
While you are changing the oil, it’s a good idea to also change the crush washer behind the oil drain bolt. This will prevent any leaks from developing around the drain hole.
Adjusting the Tire Pressure
Tire pressure should not be overlooked, as improperly inflated tires can impede performance and safety. When your tires are underinflated, they have more contact with the pavement, increasing tread wear and generating drag that lowers your speed potential. Meanwhile, overinflated tires will have reduced traction. 20 psi is the official recommendation for stock Ruckus tires, but you can inflate up to 30 psi to further minimize rolling resistance.
Inspecting the Belt and Transmission
The belt and variator weights on your Ruckus should be inspected at 1000-mile intervals. The belt is a critical component of the transmission, and a frayed belt should be replaced right away. As for the roller weights, look for any flat spots and replace them as needed to maximize your top speed.
Keeping it Clean
Last but not least, you should keep your Ruckus squeaky clean. This is not just a matter of looks! Dirt and grime can corrode the surfaces of your scooter over time, and regular cleaning gives you the perfect opportunity to perform a maintenance inspection and detect any small problems before they can start interfering with performance.
Of course, even the most well-maintained vehicle will have the occasional repair need. You can find all the replacement parts you need for your Honda Ruckus here at Honda Parts Direct.
