Riding a moped is a great way to get around, but of course, it does come with a few safety concerns. While mopeds are usually slower and less powerful than scooters and motorcycles, they can still be dangerous, especially when riding in traffic. If you’re new to owning a moped, check out the following safety tips from Honda Parts Direct!
Wear the Right Gear
First and foremost, make sure you are always wearing the proper safety gear when riding your moped. In most US states, and in many countries around the world, moped riders are legally required to wear a helmet. Regardless of the law, wearing a helmet is highly recommended! In addition to a helmet, make sure to wear a sturdy jacket and pants, ideally in bright colors that will make you stand out from the crowd. Getting noticed is key to staying safe on your moped!
Check the Weather Forecast
Before heading out on your moped, always remember to check the weather forecast. If there is a chance of rain or thunderstorms, you should consider postponing your ride until the weather improves. Wet or windy conditions can make it harder to control your moped. If you must ride in the rain, make sure to wear waterproof gear, and steer clear of puddles.
Of course, riding in extreme heat can also be dangerous. In hot weather, make sure to bring a water bottle, and take plenty of breaks to cool down.
Watch Out for Safety Hazards
When riding your moped, always keep an eye out for hazards in the road ahead. Steer clear of potholes, debris, and oil slicks, and use caution when crossing railroad tracks. The safest way to cross railroad tracks is at a perpendicular (or 90-degree) angle.
Lock Up
Last but not least, let’s not forget about protecting your moped from theft! Mopeds parked on the street can be a tempting target for thieves, but there are steps you can take to reduce the risk. For example, many potential thieves will be deterred by the presence of a U-lock or cable lock. For best results, position the lock so that it doesn’t touch the ground. This will prevent thieves from using the ground as leverage to break the lock.
With these safety tips in mind, you can go out and conquer the world on your moped!
