Finding a Sevice Manual
Before you embark on the adventure of restoring an old motorcycle, make sure to track down a model-specific service manual. Try searching for the model number online and see what you can find. Sites like eBay often have used vintage repair manuals for sale.
The user manual is a good place to start, but your best option is an OEM factory repair manual. Because they are intended for use by service technicians, these volumes contain much more detailed information than your average user manual.
Disassembly
The first step to rebuilding a classic motorcycle is to disassemble it. Before you get started, take some detailed photos of the bike as it is currently assembled. You can refer to these photos later on, as you reassemble the bike.
With that done, you can go ahead and take the motorcycle apart piece by piece, making sure to catalog and organize each part as you go. Place any small bits and pieces in plastic bags, and label them with a permanent marker.
The Restoration Process
When you have all the pieces of your vintage bike disassembled and laid out, you can take notes on the condition of each individual part, and determine what needs to be repaired or replaced. From there, you can create a detailed plan, and figure out your budget for the project.
Working with a Mechanic
Even if you are dedicated to the DIY approach, you should always consult an experienced mechanic when restoring a classic motorcycle. Your mechanic can provide a professional evaluation of the bike’s overall condition, and help you create a plan to rebuild it.
Choosing Parts
There are two basic approaches to choosing parts for a vintage motorcycle. One approach is to replicate as much as possible the original condition of the bike, by sticking with OEM parts. This approach results in the most “authentic” look and feel, but it also requires more time and money. OEM parts for older models can be rare to find, and expensive.
The other approach is to use alternative parts, from other models or manufacturers, to complete the restoration. If aesthetics are not a concern, this is a fine option that can save you a lot of trouble. You can also take this route if you are going for a more modernized, custom look.
