2-Stroke Oil
You might be aware of the differences between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, but do you know why these two engines require different kinds of oil? The simple answer is that 2-stroke engines consume oil with every revolution of the crankshaft. Due to the considerable heat generated by combustion and high rpm, the oil in a 2-stroke engine must have a higher degree of lubricity. This refers to the ability of the oil to reduce friction to counteract this heat, avoiding damage and lost performance from piston scuffing. 2-stroke oil must also contain more potent detergents, so that it burns cleaner to avoid the formation of deposits from the burning oil.
When selecting oil for your 2-stroke Honda engine, you will have the choice between full-synthetic and conventional oil. Honda GN2 Premium Conventional oil is the only engine oil that is tested and approved for use in older liquid- and air-cooled 2-stroke Honda motorcycles, ATVs, and scooters. Meanwhile, Honda HP2 Ultimate Full-Synthetic oil is a great option for newer vehicles. This formula burns exceptionally clean, with minimal carbon deposits.
4-Stroke Oil
4-stroke engines depend on a continuous supply of oil that is circulated throughout the engine to lubricate and cool the moving parts. Because the oil in a 4-stroke engine is not consumed during combustion, it has very different properties compared to 2-stroke oil. Due to the fact that they are repeatedly recycled through the engine, 4-stroke oils contain more additives to keep them stable, such as dispersants, anti-wear substances, pour point depressants, and foam retardants.
Honda offers several options for 4-stroke oil. There are conventional, full-synthetic, and semi-synthetic 4-stroke oils, as well as a special full-synthetic formula for racing vehicles. Once again, conventional oils are more compatible with older models, whereas full-synthetic oils burn cleaner. A semi-synthetic blend is a great choice for those who want the best of both worlds.
